Klickitat County Democrats condemn attempted coup
The January 6 attack on our Capitol and our democracy was a disheartening and disgraceful beginning to the year and the legislative sessions. This act of domestic terror must be called what it was—an attempted coup. It was an attempt to blatantly disregard our institutions, practices and the voice of the people. This was, in the words of former Defense Secretary Jim Mathis, "fomented by President Trump.”
State Republican lawmakers omit inconvenient truths at Town Hall
If there’s one thing that Republicans can do, it’s stay on message. This ability was never more apparent than during an hour-long December 30 Town Hall co-sponsored by the Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce and the Yakima County Development Association.
Now that the election is over, we asked Devin Kuh, how can we get better?
Devin Kuh, who somehow squeezed time out of his professional life as an educator to make a fine run for Legislative District 14 representative, has consistently praised the support he received from the Klickitat County Democrats. But now that the election is over, we asked him for a different kind of response: How can we get better?
545 Children Still Missing Their Parents
“We need to take away the children,” said Jeff Sessions in a May 2018 conference call to U.S. prosecutors stationed at our southern border. The Trump administration proceeded to do just that—yanking away thousands of children, no matter how young, from their parents—until a fierce backlash forced an end to the shameful practice.
The Virus Doesn’t Care Whose Side You’re On
Every day in the United States, the numbers go up. More than 210,000 dead. Seven million infected.
Medical professionals say that wearing masks would have greatly reduced these numbers. Imagine: grandparents still alive, mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters—alive. But they’re gone, and we grieve.
Patriots, More is Required of Us
We think of ourselves as patriots. As Americans, we have enjoyed freedoms and rights beyond what the world had ever known 244 years ago. For those who have served—whose sons and daughters have served—and been wounded, died in combat or by suicide in the aftermath of service, patriotism is more than a buzzword. It is a tangible and often heartrending reality in our daily lives because we know the true cost of our freedom.
Voter Fraud?—Invented
Donald Trump is saying that the November 3 election will be “the greatest scam in the history of politics.” Is it true?
No, it’s just one more lie. When the conservative Heritage Foundation conducted a study of voter fraud cases across the country going back to the 1970s, they turned up a rate of less than 1 vote in 740,000 -- or about 0.0001%.
Out of Work—Out of Money
Many Washingtonians are out of work and out of money. In August alone, over 19,000 people exhausted their benefits. Over 326,000 Washingtonians received benefits, although none collected additional emergency funds. Since August 2019, Washington State has lost 216,000 jobs.
In Klickitat County, 2,479 people applied for unemployment between March 15 and Sept. 6.
Wish They Were Back in School?
Across the whole of Europe, children are back in school. The same is true in Canada. What’s preventing our children from returning to school in much of the United States?
The answer is simple: Canada and Europe have largely corralled the coronavirus. Their leaders have paid attention to health professionals, instituting guidelines that have reduced infections to levels vastly below those in the United States.
Clear the Air
Wildfires have charred more than 5 million acres on the West Coast, and Klickitat County residents are breathing some of the worst air in the world. Will this be our “new normal”? Democratic and Republican leaders express vastly different viewpoints.
Black Lives Matter Statement
On July 6 2020 the membership of the KCDP approved the following statement in support of the Black Lives Matter Movement.
Recent events have spotlighted again the systemic racism of our history, our politics and particularly, our justice system. We acknowledge that racism is widely present in Klickitat County and the United States, against Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). The KCDP stands with BIPOC in their quest for Justice.
Coronavirus & How it Effects our Work
Due to concerns about the spread of the Covid-19 virus and following guidelines from the state Democratic Party, we are cancelling the In -Person gatherings and events for the time being. We continue to hold virtual meetings, including delegate selection events and even our state convention!
