545 Children Still Missing Their Parents
“We need to take away the children,” said Jeff Sessions in a May 2018 conference call to U.S. prosecutors stationed at our southern border. The Trump administration proceeded to do just that—yanking away thousands of children, no matter how young, from their parents—until a fierce backlash forced an end to the shameful practice.
Two years later, 545 children remain separated from their parents.
“Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of my brothers, you did it to me,” said Jesus Christ, according to the book of Matthew. The Bible is full of admonitions to treat refugees not with cruelty, but with love and generosity.
Instead, the Republican administration of Donald Trump not only committed the atrocity of family separation, it has also locked immigrant children into cages. These children were denied the chance to bathe and denied soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste, until the Trump administration was shamed into providing at least those necessities.
“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” Trump famously said while running for president in 2015. “They’re sending people that have lots of problems. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re bringing rapists.”
Trump’s accusations are wrong. Studies have repeatedly shown that immigrants, whether documented or not, are half as likely as native-born Americans to commit crimes.
Trump revealed his character when he told journalist Bob Woodward, “Like the Blacks, the Hispanics are too stupid to vote for me.”
Perhaps it’s because they’re too smart.
It’s time to vote Democrat.
