Patriots, More is Required of Us
We think of ourselves as patriots. As Americans, we have enjoyed freedoms and rights beyond what the world had ever known 244 years ago. For those who have served—whose sons and daughters have served—and been wounded, died in combat or by suicide in the aftermath of service, patriotism is more than a buzzword. It is a tangible and often heartrending reality in our daily lives because we know the true cost of our freedom.
Regrettably, the President of the United States does not respect or honor the men and women of the United States Armed Services, the wounded, the fallen. Instead, he scorns the wounded and the dead while shrugging off the plight of those on active duty.
Though Donald Trump has a long tiresome history of denigrating others, the following is beyond imagining from any Commander in Chief:
Speaking about John McCain: “He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”
Russia offered bounties to kill American soldiers during this presidency and Trump offered no response.
According to the Atlantic magazine, during a trip to Paris in 2018, Trump canceled a trip to Aisne-Marne American Cemetery where 1800 U.S. Marines are buried, killed at Belleau Wood during the WWI: “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.”
As Americans—as patriots, more is required of us. We must remember the fallen, honor the service of U.S. veterans, and fully support the men and women of the United States Armed Services. Waving the American flag is not enough. The .04% of Americans who serve or send their sons and daughters off to war, along with U.S. veterans, clearly know the meaning and pride of service and sacrifice for this nation. We need a president who does too.
